Celebrate Your Home!

When was the last time you really celebrated your home? For some of us that was last week and for others last year or a few years ago.

Something amazing that I learned while in Japan this summer as that they believe that spirit can be in any object or anything in nature. Because of this the Japanese people treat nature and their homes with lots of care and attention to detail. We noticed that people didn’t leave trash around, and although it’s a very populated area they left a lot of forest and green spaces to be enjoyed.

This can teach us all a powerful lesson. If spirit is in everything, if there is too much clutter covering everything in your home is the spirit trapped? Does it long to come out free, to celebrate? This is a very different concept here in the Western world, but it is a great though experiment to keep in mind. I do believe it helps me take great care in how I view my things and my home now.

This is the journey that I love to take my clients on and I plan to add more celebration to the process with upcoming projects this month. I have noticed that I look forward to holding parties and celebrations in my home. It is something that I grew up with- dinner parties, birthday parties, holidays. We always took great care with the china, silver, glassware, tablecloths and preparing special dishes. I think that there is a lost art in taking care when entertaining others in our homes. So many dining tables are turned into cluttered offices or dining rooms are turned into abandoned places for a hodgepodge of items. I want to change the home landscape and bring back the spirit of the dining room and the living room for sharing our lives with others, for celebrating and bringing out the spirit of your prized possessions.

I began to think of this concept this past Friday because on my calendar I mark each Friday with the word “Celebration.” I feel that it’s important to honor and celebrate each week and the awesome things that happened that week. The more that we focus on the positive in our lives and celebrate it, the more positive things will come about- I truly believe this in my whole heart.

From now on as I work to clear, organize and design rooms for clients and also continue to refine my own home I am focusing on helping myself and others truly celebrate the spirit of everything in our homes and how we can celebrate that and share it with others in our lives.

I will keep sharing more ideas with celebration in the coming weeks as the concepts come into my mind. Make sure to celebrate this week! Mark it on your calendar! If you used your dining table, celebrate! If you cleared a space on the counter, celebrate! It’s the small things and the big things, it’s everything!

Everything Comes with a Contract

Just imagine that every time you brought anything into your home, it came with a detailed contract that you would need to review and sign, promising to take care of the item, find a place for it and look after it for as long as it remained useful to you. We don’t tend to think of it, but every item we own has an invisible contract attached to it. Contracts would be attached to everything from a toaster to a new bath towel.

Such a contract might read:

-You must promise to keep me clean, and in working order.

-You must promise to repair me immediately.

-You must find a proper storage space for me.

-You must make sure to replace me when I wear out, and give me away or dispose of me properly.

When we really think about it, the more items we own, the more contracts like these we are actually signing and agreeing to. When we decide to de-clutter and clear our homes of items that we can no longer hold contracts on, it frees us up so much and creates more peace in our lives.

Imagine if you could have a conversation with an item on a crowded garage shelf:

Fancy Tart Pan: You know, I have sat here for 5 years, all dusty and you haven’t made a single tart with me.

You: Yes, I understand. I just don’t bake much anymore, and when I do, it’s simple items. How about I give you away to a new home where you’ll be better cared for.

Fancy Tart Pan: That sounds much better. Maybe they can actually keep up with my contract.

Yes, that tart pan can be quite demanding, right? If we can imagine the contracts and the conversations our things would have with each other, this would be how it would go. When we let go of items and realize that they will find good homes with others who can use them, we can free up our space and free up our lives from the worry of upkeep and looking after so many things.

And yes, I will give away that tart pan today that is in my garage.

What space are you creating?

This spring we are nearing the end of a project to clear some large items and a few boxes and bags of small items in our garage in anticipation of buying an electric car in the coming months. This photo above is my dream car- a red Tesla!

I have a super fun game that I play every day to see how many Teslas I can spot on the road. It’s super fun! Many times I see this red one too! My favorite!

It’s often great to have a goal in mind for the space you are creating while de-cluttering your home. Having those pictures of dreams in your mind can really encourage you and spur you on going forward.

Here are some questions to ask yourself about your spaces:

  1. How do I want to feel in this space? What does peace in this space look like and feel like to me?

  2. What do I picture myself doing in this space?

  3. What new possibilities am I opening up in my life by clearing out the clutter in this space?

  4. What surprises am I allowing for by creating some space? Empty spaces as well as empty drawers and shelves can create great energy for many things to show up in your life! You will be surprised!

Now that our garage space is nearly cleared the energy feels light and every day I see more and more Teslas! They are like a trail of beautiful dream “breadcrumbs” on the way to my intentions coming true. I can just see the car in that space. Create more space for more possibilities in your home and in your life.

When you clear a space for yourself and your dreams in your home and on your calendar you are creating freedom and peace for yourself. You will be shocked at the amazing outcomes!

To sell or not to sell? That is the question!

When I saw this comic the other day about a yard sale or “Lawn Belongings Transfer” it reminded me of our first & last garage sale. I remember it took all weekend (and many hours before that to price things, set up, advertise, put up signs and tend to our sale. All in all I think that we made under $200. Yes, many things found a new home and I do believe in reducing waste as much as possible, but giving them away by contacting a charity truck or to someone in a “buy nothing” group is much simpler and easier.

Do you like to sell your unwanted items? Do you enjoy the time it takes? I would say most people would much rather spend their free time doing fun or relaxing things other than posting things for sale, holding a garage sale, shipping the items or haggling over prices. Your time is amazingly valuable, it is a finite resource that you never, ever get back. I always consider this when thinking about selling any items that I no longer use or find joy in displaying in my home. Throwing away things is a last resort by all means for me as I am working on a very low-waste lifestyle, however I find much more joy and satisfaction in giving away the items.

I encourage clients to donate and recycle as many of their unwanted items as possible. This really is the best solution for the following reasons:

  1. Your time is immeasurably valuable: I know that as a person who values peace and freedom in my days which I have created by minimizing my things and minimizing my time commitments, most of the time you would rather spend your free time doing your hobbies, relaxing, reading a good book or catching up with a friend over coffee, tea or lunch. Posting lots of items online to sell can take a lot of time because you have to follow up with the buyer, ship the item, arrange a pick up of the item or drop it off. This can take so much more time for very little money unless the item is very valuable. Very few items are worth the time.

  2. The space you will quickly gain is more valuable: If you arrange for a charity truck to pick up your items quickly, you will gain more space and more peace of mind in your home in a short amount of time. You can reclaim a whole room in a matter of a day if you arrange for a swift pick up or drop off your items quickly at a donation center. I advise clients to do this as fast a possible so that they can enjoy the spaces in their homes again.

  3. The freedom you gain is more valuable than the money: The time freedom and the space freedom that you gain in your home is more valuable than the $2.50 or $5 per small item monetary gain that you get by selling your unwanted items. You gain freedom by quickly donating items because you will rid yourself of: frustration, stress, anxiety and more about the items that you have to post, process or deal with while selling them. If you spend too much time selling items many parts of your home will become a staging area for a bazaar instead of a real living space that you can enjoy.

  4. You can get a tax-write-off for your donations: You can get a receipt for each donation that you make. You do need to look up fair market values for items but that is easily done online. Once you get the receipt you can write the market value of the items that you donated and keep this for your tax records. At tax time you can submit these with your taxes. All of these donations can add up to some great tax savings!

I realize that clients will want to sell a few of their items, especially the more valuable or larger items before they part with them. That is perfectly okay. There is a balance that is different for everyone. I do encourage clients to choose only up to 5 items per area to sell; so that they are not overwhelmed by the selling process and thus stall the progress of clearing their home.
